Guardians of the Galaxy – Film Review

Who are the Guardians of the Galaxy you ask? Very few people knew before 2014. Now almost everybody knows. Star Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Drax and Groot. They’re the Guardians of the frickin’ Galaxy bitch.

It was a bit of a gamble for Marvel to make a film about a relatively unknown group of characters, but they’d had enough hits beforehand to warrant a that gamble. They hired James Gunn to write and direct and made some great casting choices in Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. Every character is great. They all have their own personal issues and their individual characters and seeing them forced together makes for real fun. Plus the film is hilarious!

The story concerns a galactic terrorist known as Ronan the Accuser (presumably because he keeps pointing the finger at people for things) as he seeks control of an Infinity Stone (a glowy purple rock with destructive power) to destroy a planet of space police. He’s a pretty forgettable and underwhelming villain and his henchman Korath is pretty useless too. His accomplice Nebula though is pretty interesting though. As Gamora’s adopted sister, they have a different dynamic than usual villains.

The visuals are pretty good, even if the massive, CGI-heavy final battle is a bit worn out these days. But the fun factor is definitely there. That’s what this film is about. These messed up individuals becoming a family is very fun. There’s even some emotion thrown in there for good measure. It’s like ‘Star Wars‘ but with superheroes. It’s pretty great! Plus, there is no way you can’t love Groot. He’s the most lovable character ever!

JACK’S SCORE: 4/5
