This is it. My favourite romantic comedy. You can’t get better than this. It’s perfect. Everything about it is so enjoyable I could watch it way too often. In fact, I probably do watch it way too often! Is once a day okay? No? Once every week then? I don’t care! I’ll watch it all day every day forever if I have to! Don’t hold me to that though…
Let’s start with the premise. Harry and Sally meet and travel from Chicago to New York together. Harry voices his opinion that men and women can never be friends because the sex part always gets in the way. Sally disagrees. Harry fights his corner and they decide that they will just never be friends then. Will they ever be friends? Will they be more than friends?? Who can say! But the story and the writing and the characters and all their conversations are so real and interesting. You really want to listen to what these characters have to say.
These characters are of course Meg Ryan as Sally and Billy Crystal as Harry. Crystal is hilarious and Ryan is as likable as ever. The two have a great chemistry and they work together so well on screen. Playing their two best friends are Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby, who offer a counterpoint to Harry and Sally’s relationship. However, they are still equally funny. The city of New York is almost a character itself too as some of the stunning locations used almost have their own personality.
Director Rob Reiner and writer Nora Ephron deserve heaps of credit too as together they made an uncompromising yet heart warming movie about men and women, friends and partners. If you’re not feeling all the emotions by the end of it then I guess there’s just no hope for you. This movie is great. IT’S GREAT! And if you don’t agree, well, you should just have what I’m having.
JACK’S SCORE: 5/5
